In the mid 1970's ABC Sydney launched it's "youth, rock" radio station 2JJ. It was on the AM waveband and was essentially broadcast to Sydney only, with some shows re-broadcast regionally and in Canberra. From then until the late 1980's JJ (and then JJJ after the switch to FM) evolved into what was surely one of the most innovative and ground-breaking radio stations on Earth. From late 1989 onwards JJJ was broadcast nationally (f#@k knows why they bothered) and slowly but surely morphed into a carbon copy of any other mainstream station....sad but true.

In 2014 the ABC launched a digital radio station and called it Double J. We held our breath in anticipation of the return of a station worthy of that name. Sadly only disappointment ensued. Determined not to get mad but to get even, DJ's Campbell Drummond, Jay Katz and Maynard hatched the idea to create a fitting tribute to the original 2JJ;          What Double J Should Sound Like

Quote from someone who knows

"A nod to the past, an acknowledgement of the present

and push a little boundary into the future,

but certainly look back at the great stuff

that broke the boundaries in the 70s and the 80s,

that is What Double J Should Sound Like" *

The point

All of us at What Double J Should Sound Like were lucky enough to grow up in a time of great upheaval and change in the world of music which produced an awe-inspiring catalogue of mind-blowing tunes.

Most radio stations whether mainstream or so-called alternative, mysteriously ignore most of the incredible bands and music from then and a good deal of cutting-edge music of the present day. We feel it's our duty to address this problem, even just for an hour a week.
